  1. cost.
  2. Sony stopped making the 60 gb because the emotion engine is expensive. By removing it, Sony can afford to offer the 80 PS3 at 500 bucks. The 60 gb dropped to 500 bucks because Sony was doing a massive clearance of the 60 gb. The 40 gb is mainly designed to be an entrance system. A system that's cheap enough that most people can afford. At 600 bucks, the initial 60 gb wasn't selling that well. It was expensive, and most people didn't want to shell out that much money for a console. When it dropped to 500, more people can afford it, but it still wasn't cheap enough. So, at 400 bucks, Sony is hoping that it's cheap enough or reasonable enough to get people to buy it. So far, it seems to have worked or it could be that people are buying the PS3 because there are no Wii around.
  3. From a business perspective they were loosing money on the 60 gig, mainly because of a lot of "tech stuff" in it that wasn't completely necessary. For example, they took out the chip that would allow one to play PS2 and PS1 games and replaced it with a cheaper, inferior software emulation. The 40 gig is stripped of this software emulation process all together. The 40 gig is also stripped of several other components like the ability to read digital memory cards. With the lack of these components (amongst others) Sony could now drop the price a bit without taking a huge blow and entice more customers to purchase the PS3 this Christmas season. The more consoles they sell, the more games they sell. Games, which cost pennies to make, are the financial backbone of the Playstation (not the sale of the console), especially at 60 dollars a piece :-(
  4. Sony issued a statement in October that they have discontinued production of the PS3 60GB model due to "consumer feedback", and the aim was to lower production costs & the retail price with the 40GB PlayStation 3 model. It's basically the same as the 60GB - the main thing missing is backwards capabilities with PS2 games
  5. The Playstation 3 60GB is the best console by far. It has more power, better cooling, memory card reader, can be expanded with any external hard drive, plays all PS1 & PS2 games. It is still available in certain places if you know where to look... http://www.vartate.com/gamingplaces/product~Console~PlayStation%203.cfm
