PlayStation 3?

How come the PlayStation 2 games wont work for the PlayStation 3? I read the manual and it said it was compatible for only PS3 and PS1 games. Then, I heard it was because the PS3 I was using was a 40GB. I heard they took out that content of compatibility between the PS2 and PS3 so that it would be cheaper in the 40GB. But that they kept it in the PS3's that had higher memory content (60, 80GB, etc.). Is that true? Is there a download or something like that, so I can play older games on the PS3?

1. im not sure but i know they have a playstation 2 download of somesort in the playstation store its worth a try
2. well there nothing you can download it a chip that they took out of the ps3 to save cost, so only if you get the 80GB version you can play your old games, so if you want you might be able to upgrade your console... for me I stick with my 360
