  1. Really? My PS3 plays PS2 games, maybe you have to update it, try that!
  2. You probably have a 20 gb or a 40 gb. those don't have backwards compatibility at all so that's what the problem is. the only models that can play ps2 and ps1 games is the 60 gb and 80 gb.
  3. you have the 40gb or 80gb one.. (the 20gb does play ps2 games unlike what the guy above said).. the 40gb is the only one that doesn't play ps2 games and the 80gb doesn't play all ps2 games so maybe it's just the game you are trying to play.. or your disc might just be scratched up real bad.
  4. It's because you have the 40GB PS3. The 40GB PS3 can play PS1 games but not PS2 games. Also, the 80GB PS3 isn't compatible with SOME PS1 and PS2 games and that could be the problem as well. Edit: If you have the 80GB PS3, make sure that they PS3 is updated to the latest software version. And the people that are saying that the 20GB PS3 can't play PS1 games are WRONG!!! The 20GB PS3 has full backward compatibility with both PS1 and PS2 games just like the 60GB PS3 because they both have the Emotion Engine chip.
  5. In the beginning the PS3 had a 20GB and a 60 GB , they both played PS2 games.. the very first model of the PS3 had the PS2 chips within it. Because of the cost of having the PS2 chiPS inside the ps3 Sony had to cut cost due to a high price point which is not attractive to the mainstream gamers, So in they came with the new models the 40 GB $399 and the $499 80GB , now the 40GB cannot play PS3 games.. it does not have backwards compatibility but will in the future with software updates.. i would say in about a year , the 80GB has "Emulation Software" that will let u play 80% of the ps2 games that are out there. Soon sony is coming out with a 120gb and 160gb model which should contain Emulation software, most likely around august I would say, right before the xmas rush. What I would recommend is seeing if u can find an older 60 gb with the ps2 chip built in so u can play 100% of the ps2 games.. some people will trade straight up for a 40Gb or 80 just cuzz its a new model.. not worth it thou, Cuzz the hard drive can be changed at anytime. You could change the harddrive size to 500gb if u wanted , just have to buy the 500gb hard drive
