  1. ...All ps3s can play ps1 games. The 40 gig ps3 is the only ps3 that does not play ps2 games. The 20, 60, and 80 models can. anyone, know, why, to, please
  2. is pending on the model you have to play the ps 2 games, but every ps3 can play it except the 40GB model. the 40GB model, sony decide to opt out the "emotion engine" that drives the ps2 systems. so like the dude above said, avoid the 40GB model.
  3. All versions of the PS3 play PS1 games. To play PS2 games you need the 80gb version, or one of the older (no longer sold) 20gb or 60gb versions. The older machines actually run more PS2 games as they have both the CPU and GPU in hardware, whereas the 80gb version has only the GPU. You can check which games run, or have issues on sony's website. The last figures I saw (6 months ago) were 80% compatibility with only the GPU and 95% from hardware with GPU and CPU, but the compatibility is increased with each update to the OS, all the newest games seem to run on all compatible systems (i.e NOT the 40gb)
  4. Pfft. That doesnt make any sense, why would they only allow the 80gb ps3 to play ps2 games? Its his question but I had to comment, stupid move on Sony's part.
  5. PS1 games are probably easier to emulate to the PS3 than PS2 games because they are less complex. That is why the PS3 does not have any PS1 hardware and only requires software updates to play. The 80GB version is the only version (that is available now) to have backwards compatibility with PS2 games and even it is limited.
  6. it depends on what ps3 u got if it doesnt play ps2 games then u probably got the 20 or 40 gb, while the 60 and 80 gb can play most ps2 games
